College and Career Ready

In today’s global, knowledge-based economy, a college education is the gateway to social mobility and better lifelong opportunities. The vast majority of America’s high school students (86 percent) expect to attend college, but many lack the support and guidance they need to prepare for enrollment and success in college. Under the California Department of Education's Dashboard, students are deemed "college and career ready" if they fulfill the requirements listed in the diagram below:

Here at Garey High School, we aim to get every student college and career ready by the time they graduate. School counselors help students become College and Career Ready by:
Updating students' 4-year plan/individual learning plans on a yearly basis
Sharing successes with stakeholders
Providing classroom presentations on Credits Matter and A-G requirements
Work on college planning starting at the incoming 8th grade level and continuing throughout their high school career
Provide graduation and college and career planning for every high school senior
Provide college application workshops
Provide financial aid workshops
Give pre-college testing information (SAT and ACT)
Attend the yearly registration for all students to assist students in selecting the appropriate courses needed for graduation and to meet the A-G requirements
Conduct parent/student conferencing in regards to grades and progress towards graduation
