INTERESTED IN BECOMING A PEER COUNSELOR?

As Peer Counselors our job is to listen, empathize, support, communicate, acknowledge, clarify, make decisions, monitor, prevent, provide resources, and report information when necessary. We Do Not provide solutions or give advice regarding our client’s issues.

As Peer Counselors we are good role models, honest, trust worthy, good communicators, sincerely interested in the well being of others, patient, approachable, tolerant, open minded, positive, empathetic, and respectful.

Peer Counseling is a wonderful way to help, encourage and be there for those who are in need. If this sounds like an opportunity for you to be there for others, then we would love to have you onboard. Stop by room 401 and ask how to join our team.

PEER COUNSELING IA/B, 2A/B, 3A/B

Course #1001

It is well known that students will talk to other students and are much more likely to share personal information about themselves and their problems with their peers. Knowing this, the Garey High School Peer Counseling program was started. It was designed to allow trained high school students to listen to their peer’s social emotional problems. They might then be able to make informed decisions on what resources their clients may need to better help them with their concerns. All of this would be done under the close monitoring of a Peer Counseling Advisor. Peer Counselors are trained in active listening skills, communication skills, empathy awareness, the art of questioning, and a variety of ongoing mental health topics.

The program has entered its first year as an all day program and has proven successful in helping students with their issues by providing resources through School Mental Health and Community Schools, being active listeners, preventing self-harm and suicide, providing awareness on metal health topics, and helping to be the eyes and ears of what goes on around campus and our community.
